Free Online Character Encoding Converter - Shift-JIS to UTF-8
Free online character encoding converter: Shift-JIS to UTF-8, GBK, Big5, EUC-KR, ISO-8859-1, fix mojibake and inspect hex bytes. Runs in your browser.
Features
Nine encodings side by side
UTF-8, UTF-16, ISO-8859-1, Windows-1252, Big5, GBK, Shift-JIS, KOI8-R and EUC-KR are decoded from the same byte stream at once, so you can compare the damage a wrong encoding does in a single glance.
Hexadecimal bytes of the input
The exact bytes your text encodes to are printed as hex, which is what you actually paste into a hex editor or a HTTP charset header when a file turns into garbage.
Useful when text turns into mojibake
Type the broken text exactly as you received it, pick the encoding it really was, and read off how it should have been decoded - the standard way to repair garbled Shift-JIS, GBK or Latin-1 output.
Nothing is uploaded
Every conversion runs in your own browser using the same decoding tables browsers and Node.js use. No account, no server round trip, and your text never leaves the device.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Shift-JIS to UTF-8?
Select Shift-JIS as the source encoding and type or paste the text. The field labelled UTF-8 shows the same characters as browsers will read once the bytes are interpreted as UTF-8, which is what you want for modern web pages, JSON APIs and databases.
How do I convert ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) online?
Choose ISO-8859-1 as the encoding of your input. Because ISO-8859-1 maps every byte to exactly one character, it is the safest reading when a server declares text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 but the bytes are really UTF-8 - pick it and read the UTF-8 row to recover the original text.
Why does my text display as strange characters such as 䏿–‡?
That pattern is UTF-8 bytes decoded as ISO-8859-1 or Windows-1252, one per byte. Paste it in, select ISO-8859-1 as the source encoding, and the UTF-8 output shows the text you originally meant.
What is the difference between GBK, GB2312 and GB18030?
They are three revisions of the Chinese national standard. GB2312 covers common Simplified Chinese only, GBK adds traditional characters and is what most older Windows systems still use, and GB18030 is the superset that Windows has used since Vista and that Unicode maps completely.
Can I convert a whole file instead of typed text?
This page works on the text itself. For large files, load them in a browser, a database client or an IDE that lets you pick the input encoding explicitly, then export as UTF-8 - the browser and server must both agree on the charset for anything above ASCII to survive.
